A nerve root block is sometimes recommended as an alternative to an epidural.
They are administered in an operating theatre. You will usually be sedated briefly.
The actual procedure only takes a few minutes, but you will be in hospital for a few hours
The diagram below shows what is known as a far lateral disc herniation.
This is often more uncomfortable than more common variants of disc herniation, with pressure being applied to a very sensitive part of the nerve root
